Ecovila Cunha and the planet thank you!

The Mata Atlântica (Atlantic rainforest) of Brazil is the most diverse ecosystem on Earth – there are more plant and animal species per hectare than anywhere else on the planet.

And after 500 years of deforestation, 94% of the Mata Atlântica is gone.

While we are fortunate to live near national and state parks where the rainforest is protected, it’s vitally important to expand and connect the remnants of the forest that still exist outside the parks.

Two-thirds of our 90-acre property is currently forested, and we plan to keep it that way by establishing a private ecological reserve (Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural – RPPN).

On the rest of our land, which was cleared for cattle decades ago, we’ve been planting native trees – araçá, ipê, jatobá, painera and other species – with financial support from the RainforestEcoBank in the USA and volunteer labor from participants in our Open House weekends at the ecovila.

This year, we’re reducing the size of the pear orchard on our property, removing old, damaged and unproductive pear trees and planting a variety of fruit and nut trees adapted to our coastal mountain climate.

Then we’ll plant flowers, vegetables and forage crops throughout the orchard, and introduce chickens, ducks and bees in a permaculture design.

Thanks for your support!
